Responsive Web Design

Responsive Web Design is a way of developing web pages that adapt well to any device they're viewed on. The basic ingredients: a fluid grid; CSS3 media queries; and flexible images.

There's much more to the story, however. Creating even the simplest responsive site will force you to make decisions about:

  • how to harmonize your existing content with the new design and navigation patterns;
  • what tools to use to iterate quickly, avoid waste, and maximize learning;
  • which units of measure to base your design on;
  • grid or no grid;
  • existing framework versus a per—project approach;
  • fluid versus adaptive;

and many others.

RWD is an exciting field because it integrates every other aspect of developing websites: Content Strategy, Information Architecture, Optimization — the entire user experience.
